The Vice

and the President of the Danube Bureau Council in Novi Sad/Vojvodina
participated in the conference and chaired the plenary session.
Together with Mr.Sandor Egeresi, the conference was chaired by
Mr. Ivo Gener, Mayor of Ulm (Federal Republic of Germany), Mr Giovani
Distazi, Vice president of the European Union Parliament, Mr Florian
Fihtl, a Representative of the World Bank, Mr Ivailo Calfin, Minister
of Foreign Affairs and dr Ivan Cenov, Mayor of Vidin.
The significance of cooperation and communication of cities and regions
of the Danube Region has been confirmed and underlined at the conference,
and it was indicated that the cooperation was an extremely important
segment of the development of the future of the river being a real
symbol of unity and a confirmation of the European identity. In his
presentation, Mr Sandor Egeresi has pointed out the importance of
developing cooperation towards the institutional form of the Danube
Region as the previous activities indicate that connecting the regions
contributes to strengthening the European integration and European
unity because, even though the principles of European togetherness
include the elements of globalisation, they, at the same time, take
care of specificities of each country, region and national community.
Mr. Egeresi has specifically pointed out the European values that
Vojvodina's citizens live with, as well as emphasised that its multiculturality,
multiethnicity and multiconfesionalism are parts of the European
spirit.
At the conference, discussions were held about concrete projects
in infrastructure, investments, environmental protection, flood protection,
bicycle paths, economy and all other issues that may increase the
citizens' living standard.
At the end of the conference, the Declaration was adopted, on the
basis of which the institutional foundation of the Danube region
was initiated as a new form of regional cooperation that will be
implemented by the Council of the Danube Conference, consisting of
Mr Ivo Gener, Mr Sandor Egeresi and dr Ivan Cenov. The agreement
has been made on the presentation of the Danube region as a model
for multiethnic and intercultural society in Europe in Brussels,
in November of 2008 and the arrangements have been made of the 4th
conference to be held in 2009 in Hungary. |
